Academic tenure refers to the permanent appointment of
faculty members in institutions of higher education, such that they can only be
dismissed from their positions for highly serious forms of misconduct or due to
extraordinary circumstances like programme discontinuation. Generally, firing
staff with tenure is rather difficult although not impossible, and often
requires there to have been a criminal charge. Tenure is usually granted on the
basis of research published, service length or the ability to gain significant
external funding for the institution that they work in.
